Save Lake Cowal
As a result of cyanide accidents many countries have
now banned the use of cyanide in the mining industry.
Lake Cowal is the Heartland of the Wiradjuri Nation (In
Victoria, Australia). It is also the largest inland freshwater
lake in NSW, a floodplain, and an internationally important
wetland. The Campaign to protect Lake Cowal has been
active ever since the plan to build a cyanide gold mine at
the site by Canadian company, Barrick Gold was
announced. Main concerns are the use of cyanide, stored
in large open pits, water consumption, and the desecration
of a sacred site. Now, with construction almost complete,
Barrick are due to pour it’s first gold bar in April, and urgent
fundraising and awareness is needed.
