We need sustainable options for our water future (Victoria)

We need sustainable options for our water future (Victoria). Please write to the Premier and Water Minister This alert is current until March 2009. One of the fine print details in all the tragedy of the fires is that the Vic government is saying that, more than ever, we ‘need’ the desal plant and the North South pipeline.

This is not true, of course. There are details on alternatives here:

Background information on the impacts of these projects and viable aternatives are available here.

we need sustainable options for our water future

  •  no desalination plant
  •  no North South pipeline
  •  stop logging our water catchments

Dear Mr Brumby and Mr Holding

We understand and appreciate your work to secure Melbourne’s water future. Your government is investing more than $5 billion on a range of projects including one of the world’s largest desalination plants and the North South pipeline.

However, both these projects will bring massive negative environmental and social impacts. They are incredibly expensive. The desalination plant will be controlled by a multinational company and will consume vast quantities of energy.

We call on you to invest public funds in more sustainable and job rich solutions – such as  upgrades of Melbourne’s existing water treatment plants, a major roll out of rain water tanks,   stormwater harvesting and substitution for drinking water, an end to logging in our water catchments, and other options.

We urge you to change your current water policy, which is threatening our inland river systems, the Mornington Peninsula and South Gippsland coast, and which will generate almost no long term jobs. We do not support the building of the pipeline or the desalination plant.

We are generating good numbers of letters but need more, it seems more important than ever to be calling for a no desal/ no pipeline/ stop logging our catchments policy in the wake of the fires.
