In a landmark court case due to be heard in a Federal Court in NYC, June 2009, Oil corporation Dutch Royal Shell (SHELL) will stand trial for Human Rights abuses against the Indigenous peoples of the Niger Delta.
Charges brought against Shell allege complicity with the Nigerian Government in committing crimes against humanity, including the torture and state execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and 8 other peace and environmental activists known as the ‘Ogoni Nine’ in 1995. Shell will also face charges of complicity with successive Nigerian governments in brutal military attacks on local communities in the Niger Delta, which has resulted in 50 000 people being killed and 20 communities wiped out since 1998.
As this landmark case is poised to go to trial, the situation in the Niger Delta has reached a crisis point, with massive military attacks since May 13, 2009, including aerial bombardment and the destruction of entire villages, killing or displacing thousands of local people. The numbers of dead and wounded unknown as the International Red Cross and other humanitarian aid organisations have been prevented from entering the Delta to provide emergency medical aid, food and shelter for survivors.
Niger Delta and the plight of its people is not being well reported in the international media.
